Stress, mental health, self-esteem and teen substance abuse top the list of issues our local teens believe are affecting them the most. That's according to the most recent survey of the Community Foundation's Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC), which surveys youth across our region every three years. “These subjects seem to be symptoms of the general need in our communities, and are issues that need to be addressed on many levels," said Alpena NEMYAC Advisor Tom Stoppa. A chance for our local kids to read 1,000 books before they start school? Yes, please! A grant from the Women’s Giving Circle of the Community Foundation provided funding for the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library to begin participation in the national “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program. It’s a new early literacy program specifically designed to give babies and toddlers the best start possible on lifelong reading and learning skills. The level of 1,000 books is based on current research emphasizing that reading to youngsters builds critical language and social emotional skills. Contact the library for more information on this great program! More →

CFNEM’s Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) provides grants for “issues important to the women of Northeast Michigan”. In the case of a grant to Joy Fellowship of First United Methodist Church of Alpena, that meant supporting the mission of local women who want to help families, mainly women and children, from war-torn countries bordering Kenya. Working in partnership with a group of nursing students who travel to work with people in Kenya, this grant helped the UMC ladies provide text books for K-8 children from the International Displaced Persons Settlement in Kenya, and children from a nearby orphanage. These books are helping the students to meet educational requirements in a newly updated curriculum. Pictured here are stacks of textbooks purchased through this grant, waiting to be stacked and sorted. The room pictured is used as both a classroom and sleeping quarters. More →

With the help of a $1,000 grant from our Straits Area Community Foundation affiliate, 44 individuals with disabilities had the opportunity to learn important life skills through a culinary program of Straits Area Services. “We take a lot for granted when it comes to our daily tasks,” said Amy Carter of Straits Area Services. “Many of our clients have never had the opportunity to learn these life skills. We were able to give them a new experience and teach them things like proper food handling, how to follow a recipe, and how to measure ingredients. These skills are an important step for each client to reach their highest level of independence.” More →

Garden…plate…wellness. This is a great program through the Tolfree Foundation that encourages healthier lifestyles through nutrition and exercise. “This program has opened avenues to healthier lifestyle, and lowered the heart health risk factors for our children and the community by educating people how to grow, eat and exercise to stay or become healthy,” says Cynthia Longchamps of the Tolfree Foundation. This project was funded in part through a grant from our North Central Michigan Community Foundation affiliate. More →

That’s a lot of personal care items, set to help out a lot of people in need. With 15.8% of northern Michigan’s population living under the poverty line, programs that provide basic human needs are incredibly important. A recent Community Impact grant from our North Central Michigan Community Foundation affiliate provided funding to purchase plenty of items and medical equipment for the Ogemaw Hills Free Clinic’s Personal Care Closet. Clinic staff told us of a woman who came to the facility looking for medical equipment for her elderly mother. When she asked about assistance with personal care items, “the look of relief on her face spoke volumes. She shared how her mom was out of shampoo and other basic items due to her financial struggle. With both the medical equipment and the personal care items we were able to provide, her mom's financial burden was relieved a wee bit - and she walked away with a few less things to worry about. “ More →
