"This year youth have felt very alone and isolated due to the uncertainty the year brought. We noticed again and again that when a girl from the group was having a bad day, the other girls were there to support and boost her confidence." That's what Jennifer Dingman of the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena says about the 2021 SMART Girls program, which helped young girls with socializing, providing a sense of security, community, acceptance and belonging. A Northeast Michigan Women's Giving Circle Grant helped fund this cool program.

“I have been struggling with getting in and out of the shower due to my disability for quite some time. I contacted Habitat to see if there was any way that they could help. With this grant I was able to have a handicap shower installed. I no longer fear getting in and out of the tub. I feel a little more independent also. This would have never been possible without the help of Habitat and the community foundation.” A $5,000 CFNEM Community Impact Grant supported Northeast Michigan Habitat for Humanity's "Aging in Place" project to make three low-income households safer by making repairs and improvements to remove safety hazards and improve safety measures. Projects included installing a handicap walk in shower, replacing deteriorated front doors, replaced countertop, cupboard, and kitchen sink, replaced water lines, installed new toilets, and installed carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.

Looking good! A $2,175 CFNEM grant to Alpena Huron Shore Babe Ruth provided funding for upgrades to the ball field complex dugouts, which should last 30 to 40 years. Project organizers say many people have commented that these fields are some of the nicest they’ve played in or seen.

Do you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home? We hope so! A $3,000 CFNEM Community Impact Grant to the City of Alpena Fire Dept. provided funds for 150 carbon monoxide detectors to help keep people safe from the colorless, odorless gas that can kill. Andy Marceau says he personally installed one of the detectors in a home owned by an elderly couple and informed them that if the alarm goes off, to leave the house immediately and call 911. Just two weeks later, the alarm went off on a Saturday afternoon, and the family did as instructed, potentially saving their lives. When the fire units responded, they found a high amount of carbon monoxide in the home. We are thankful to be able to impact our communities positively like this through grantmaking!

“Helen, we have to figure out what to do with our money.” Those are the words Carl Basel said to his wife Helen that started a tradition of giving; one that reflected a love of trees and forestry, and a great passion for northeast Michigan’s people. Foundation staff had the opportunity to chat with Carl in spring of 2019 as he was approaching his 100th birthday. He spoke often about his father, and the influence he had on so much of Carl’s life. “The best things he taught me were the importance of two things: honesty and integrity. Stick to what you believe in. Learn what you can about something, decide how you feel about it, then when you know you’re right, stand behind what you believe in.” Read our full story about Mr. Basel at https://www.cfnem.org/resources/passion-with-a-purpose-volume-ii.html
