The Straits Area Community Needs Fund and Why it Matters

Your Biggest Impact

Monday, October 3, 2022

Community Foundation grants to Alpena Gymnastics provided funding for a rock climbing system that adds fun, adventure, and another form of exercise to serve both gymnasts and non-gymnasts. “The climbing system gives kids a safe way to overcome fear and find a sense of accomplishment. One little girl looked over at the climbing system wall and said, "I could never do that!" Later in the class she tried and fell. She landed on mats. Our coaches asked if she was ok. She said ‘Yes, it was a little scary but next class I am going to do it!” said Leah Stafford of Alpena Gymnastics.

What a fun summer event! A CFNEM grant to Friends of Negwegon State Park provided funding for the Bay to Beacon race, taking runners and walkers from Negwegon State Park to the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse in Harrisville. The race included a half marathon, 10K and 5K. In addition to the races, the event focused on promoting eco-tourism, providing a zero-waste event, and highlighting the area’s natural beauty.

A grant to the Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention for Alcona County, Inc. (CANPAC) to support the Alcona County Community Baby Shower provided parents and caregivers with free cribs, pack-and-plays, safe sleep items, and car seats. Project organizers say that everyone that received any of these items said they could not afford to purchase one on their own. As part of the project, each parent receiving sleep items took a pretest on safe sleep, watched an educational video on safe sleep, and then completed a post test; and those receiving a car seat were showed how to use them properly and safely. One car seat technician said, "I had a mom say she was so thankful for the resources in the area. She had a 2-year-old special needs child and another baby on the way. She said financially, it's been hard and without the car seat, she wasn't ready for the new baby. It was nice to be able to provide her the infant carrier and bring her some relief and assurance."

This Straits Area Community Foundation grant is a heart-warmer and is one that will continue to have a positive impact for hospice patients and their friends and families. An SACF grant provided funding for Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity volunteers to build temporary ramps that could be attached to homes for hospice patients. The ramps can be reused at another household, providing help for more patients and families. “George was our first Hospice Ramp Program Partner and prior to his ramp, he was not able to get out of his home safely for a year. We installed a temporary ramp off his back porch and built a mini-ramp so he could get out of his home and on to his porch safely,” says Mandy Martin of Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity. “George made sure to test out the ramps as soon as Habitat was done building them and he had the biggest smile on this face. Being able to get out to his beautiful back yard to enjoy the sunshine, nature and his beautiful flowers is something he was looking forward to.”
