Crawford County, and all of northern Michigan, lost a much-loved man when former Crawford County Sheriff Kirk Wakefield passed away last month. His legacy will live on in many ways, including through a new fund established at our affiliate foundation, the North Central Michigan Community Foundation. The Sheriff Kirk Alan Wakefield Memorial Scholarship Fund will support Crawford County residents who will attend Kirtland Community College to pursue a career in law enforcement through KCC's Criminal Justice and Kirtland Regional Police Academy programs. The fund was established with $5,000, and the donor will match an additional $5,000 in gifts to the fund from others. The first scholarship will be awarded in 2020. Those interested in donating can give online at https://www.cfnem.org/ncmcf/funds/give.html?fund=1050. More →

How fun does “Liquid Sunshine” sound?! A $2,000 NE MI Women’s Giving Circle grant supported a day-long STEM workshop, called Tech Savvy, for 6th – 9th grade girls in northeast Michigan. Hands-on workshops like “Creative Coding”, “Liquid Sunshine” and “Marshmallow Fling” encourage girls to pursue STEM-related education and careers. Women are greatly underrepresented in these fields. This grant was awarded to the American Association of University Women – Gaylord. More →

The Huron Humane Society has dealt with LOTS of animal health issues. In October 2018, a litter of three kittens arrived at the shelter covered in fleas and struggling to survive. Despite the best efforts of veterinarians and staff, two of the kittens died. But little Francis, pictured here, was able to keep fighting and is now a strong, proud kitty! HHS sent us these photos, as well as some of their new and improved medical treatment room, which was funded in part by a $5,000 Community Impact grant. In 2018, the shelter served 621 dogs and cats. Spring is in the air (kind of)! To showcase a grant, and remind us that the flowers will bloom again, check out these great pics of a Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative project which purchased education kits for children to discover and learn about pollinators and nature. 1st graders at Alcona Elementary School worked on this pollinator garden at the Alcona County Library in Harrisville, figuring out how much soil was needed, how to make seed balls, and learning about pollination. A $1,000 grant to NEMIGLSI helped support the project. More →

When the Iosco Regional Educational Service Agency (IRESA) set a goal to get 100 children in Alcona and Iosco Counties registered for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, they exceeded it, big time! Because of their efforts, and through the help of grants, including one from the Community Foundation, over 310 children under the age of 5 in those counties are getting an age-appropriate book in the mail each month. Parents whose kids are enrolled in the program say their kids are so excited each month when their new books arrive in the mailbox! What a great way to get kids pumped up about books! More →

Getting our young girls involved and excited about STEM and robotics…how cool! A Northeast Michigan Women’s Giving Circle Grant helped fund the girls’ robotics team at Wilson Elementary School in Alpena. Project organizers say it was rewarding to watch some students who are not normally active participants become really involved in the activities, showing great excitement and enthusiasm. Some girls took on leadership roles. Students gained skills in collaboration, technology, job skills, and inventory. More →
