The Straits Area Community Needs Fund and Why it Matters

Your Biggest Impact

Members of the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (YAC) helped package boxes of food for families in need during a March community service event with the Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency. Community service is one of the four pillars of the Youth Advisory Council program, alongside philanthropy, leadership and grantmaking. YAC members aim to provide support for programs addressing needs for their peers through their grant funding and service work. More →

The Huron Humane Society has dealt with LOTS of animal health issues. In October 2018, a litter of three kittens arrived at the shelter covered in fleas and struggling to survive. Despite the best efforts of veterinarians and staff, two of the kittens died. But little Francis, pictured here, was able to keep fighting and is now a strong, proud kitty! HHS sent us these photos, as well as some of their new and improved medical treatment room, which was funded in part by a $5,000 Community Impact grant. In 2018, the shelter served 621 dogs and cats. Spring is in the air (kind of)! To showcase a grant, and remind us that the flowers will bloom again, check out these great pics of a Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative project which purchased education kits for children to discover and learn about pollinators and nature. 1st graders at Alcona Elementary School worked on this pollinator garden at the Alcona County Library in Harrisville, figuring out how much soil was needed, how to make seed balls, and learning about pollination. A $1,000 grant to NEMIGLSI helped support the project. More →

When the Iosco Regional Educational Service Agency (IRESA) set a goal to get 100 children in Alcona and Iosco Counties registered for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, they exceeded it, big time! Because of their efforts, and through the help of grants, including one from the Community Foundation, over 310 children under the age of 5 in those counties are getting an age-appropriate book in the mail each month. Parents whose kids are enrolled in the program say their kids are so excited each month when their new books arrive in the mailbox! What a great way to get kids pumped up about books! More →

Getting our young girls involved and excited about STEM and robotics…how cool! A Northeast Michigan Women’s Giving Circle Grant helped fund the girls’ robotics team at Wilson Elementary School in Alpena. Project organizers say it was rewarding to watch some students who are not normally active participants become really involved in the activities, showing great excitement and enthusiasm. Some girls took on leadership roles. Students gained skills in collaboration, technology, job skills, and inventory. More →

“A young boy came to our building with his mother a while ago. He told us the other kids made fun of him and his clothes. His coat was ripped front to back with white insulation hanging out. He had no socks, holey jeans, and his shoes had soles separated from the uppers so they flapped when he walked. He left a while later with new boots, new shoes, a coat, gloves and socks, hat and snow pants. His little face was beaming, and he said he couldn’t wait to get to school to show off his new clothes!” That’s a real story from a volunteer at Iosco County Coats for Kids. A recent report from the Michigan Association of United Ways shows that an average of 46% of households within our Community Foundation’s service area are unable to afford basic needs, whether for an individual, or for a family. This is just one reason why organizations like Iosco County Coats for Kids is so important in our area. Despite the name, this nonprofit is providing winter essentials for children of all ages in Iosco, Ogemaw and Alcona Counties. More →

Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library received a $2,000 Community Impact Grant to purchase the Barton Reading System for use in their READ program. The system is an effective alternative to adult literacy reading materials, especially for those previously diagnosed with a reading disability such as dyslexia. Project organizers say “the direct focus on dyslexia, and the sequential method of instruction, makes this a resource of unlimited value that can be used for years to come.” More →
