Last year, Grant the Golden Goose was unveiled, and now goes each year to the organization that raises the most money on Giving Tuesday. In 2017, the Northeast Michigan Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) took ownership of him. But now, Grant’s residency is up for grabs! Julie Wiesen is set on keeping Grant at the Community Foundation for the WGC, but we know some others who want this goose! (Isn’t he regal?) #handsoffmygoose #givingtuesdaynemi More →

It takes a caring heart, a charitable spirit, and an effort to make your community better in some way. At the Iosco County Community Foundation, we believe EVERYONE can be a philanthropist, and for that, we celebrate today! More →

This story embodies the spirit of philanthropy! These three men - Keith Charters, John Kulhavi and Dennis Fuerst – were members of the first Whittemore-Prescott High School football team in 1957. Now, more than sixty years later, these same three men joined forces to establish the Whittemore-Prescott Education Foundation (WPEF), pulling in W-P alumni Gary Gillings and W-P Superintendent Joe Perrera. At a recent football game, the three former football team members conducted the coin toss at the W-P/Alcona game to help raise awareness of WPEF, whose goal is to enhance the educational experience for students at Whittemore-Prescott Area Schools through its grants. It’s a venture that is already benefiting these students through classroom technology, a robotics program and a watershed testing program. Learn more about this grass-roots effort through the Whittemore-Prescott Education Foundation. More →

Our community is fortunate to have the new Iosco Children’s Assessment Center. Since opening, the office has interviewed over 50 children regarding concerns of child abuse and neglect. While this is alarming and heartbreaking, it is also evidence of how much a facility like this is needed in our communities to support children and families. The Iosco County Community Foundation provided funding through the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) program to purchase furnishings for the interview room. “Being able to establish a family friendly environment for children when there are allegations of child abuse and neglect is an important outcome of this project,” said Rebecca Yuncker. “When children are interviewed in this environment they are more likely to disclose abuse, allowing us to hold offenders accountable and get children the help they need to heal from their abuse.” Thank you to the Northern Michigan Children's Assessment Center and all of the community members who worked hard to bring these services to Iosco County. This is a really cool project for Iosco County! The completion of a trappers’ cabin at Lumberman’s Monument near Oscoda, Mich. is not only providing an interactive educational experience for its visitors; it is also creating a legacy for retired Forest Service employee Robert Reames. Mr. Reames donated the cabin to Lumberman’s Monument to be used for youth educational experiences. Sadly, Mr. Reames passed away shortly after making the donation, but his legacy lives on through the help of volunteers, grants and community organizations who have all pitched in to finish the cabin and make it ready for public enjoyment. Check out these great photos! If you’re looking for a fun weekend outing, why not head to Lumberman’s Monument to check out this cabin, as well as the other exhibits and beautiful views! More →

$11,000 in new grants were decided on last week. “Through several different funds at ICCF, we were able to put funding toward some great projects that affect our communities. We had some really tough decisions to make on applications this year,” said ICCF Board President Tony Johnson. “These grants reflect education as one of our priorities, but also the importance of helping people connect with necessary human services outlets; a program that brings greater appreciation for our precious natural resources; and a program that helps young families get a solid start.” Check out the full list of grants here: http://www.cfnem.org/iccf/resources/news-and-features/iosco-county-community-foundation-announces-11000-in-new-grants.html More →

When it comes to showing the impact of a grant, this quote from H20 (Helping 2 Overcome) about their "Call of the Wild Child Wilderness Camp" says it all: "This past summer and summer of 2018 we offered (are offering) past H2O participants a chance to attend a "Wilderness Adventure," featuring canoeing, fishing, trail riding, camping out, cooking out, and team building activities all under the guidance of a local professional wilderness therapist and his staff. We offered 6 positions to our former H2O youth, 2 to the Department of Human Services, and 2 to the Juvenile Division of the Probate Court. To say the youth were inexperienced is an understatement. At one point in the journey, the guide looked up and saw two participants facing opposite ends of the canoe and wondering why they weren't moving anywhere! One member, when asked what was the best thing about the trip responded, "The best part about this trip was just the trip itself. I've never camped before, and the fishing was a lot of fun. It was also a really good chance to remind us that if we didn't work together, we didn't accomplish anything." According to Travis Boik, "These kids are really unique individuals each with something special to contribute. They are interested in many different things, and willing to try new things. They were also exceptional at learning to work together and help one another." The participants' take on the trip? "Make it longer," "One day was not enough," "More time to fish and swim," "I finally got a chance to really make some friends outside of school. Now we have a fun experience to look back on. I feel like I'm finally "in" a group." More →

If you’ve seen our posts, you’ve probably seen mention that ICCF is “an affiliate of the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM)”. What does that mean? CFNEM is the administrative arm for our local community foundation, while ICCF has a board of local leaders who serve as ambassadors, grantmakers, and advocates for our communities. At over $5.5 million in assets, ICCF is able to make a real impact in our communities. With your support, that impact can only be greater! More →
