Howard French was the Community Foundation's first Executive Director, back when our name was Northeast Michigan Community Foundation. He was a driving force in the establishment of CFNEM and remains a large and significant part of the Foundation's history. Our gratitude, thoughts and well wishes are with Mr. Howard's family and friends. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/howard-french-obituary?id=39026906

Little things are big things. In December, the Mikado Goodfellows hosted a special Christmas event where children could come to meet Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, get a bag of candy and a special gift, and enjoy punch and cookies. “No Child Without a Christmas” project organizer Kay Lovelace told us of a little boy who came with his parents to visit Santa. “He told us how thankful he was for having the opportunity to come to a nice place and be able to tell Santa what was on his list, get a bag of treats and a gift. He then said what he was really thankful for was his mom and dad. He said his parents told him how thankful he should be to be able to come and see Santa because some children do not get that opportunity. He then turned around and asked Santa if he should leave his gift for the kids who couldn't come to see him. Melts my heart to think someone that young is thinking about the children who do not get a lot.” CFNEM grant funding helped support this project.

Did you know that Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity does more than just build homes? They also help people in need to get access to needed services and products for their families through Project Connect. In 2022 they were able to serve 40% more people than the previous year. Two Straits Area Community Foundation grants provided funding to purchase personal hygiene items, diapers, baby wipes and giveaways through the event. Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Mandy Martin says “We had a new mother who had never attended before. She was able to receive support from so many agencies and she ended up with a new, installed car seat thanks to Child Advocacy Council. Sometimes people just need help to turn the corner and excel in life. We were able to help provide this for this new momma and many other community members.”
