What a cool project – and one that kind of brings on Spring Fever! The Alcona Community Garden provides hands-on educational opportunities, provides food for the community, and will help provide healthy meals for the schools’ cafeterias. A $3,000 Community Impact Grant to Alcona Community Schools helped construct raised beds, update irrigation and purchase a hoop house.

Even if it's just you at your home, you still count.

Filling out the Census allows for your voice to be heard. If even one person is missed, the state of Michi...gan could lose thousands a year of federal funding. There will not be another recount until 2030.

Do it for your community. When everyone is counted, everyone wins. #MIVoiceCounts2020

This is one grant with potential for huge impact on many lives. $5,500 in grants through our North Central Michigan affiliate went to the Crawford Roscommon Child Protection Council to support their “Safe Journey Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative”. This program aims to reduce the number of newborns exposed or addicted to drugs and alcohol through education and prevention. Part of the program educates individuals and the community on the effect opioids, alcohol, marijuana and tobacco can have on an unborn child, and the lifelong effect it can have on children. Grants came from the Oscoda and Ogemaw County Health Care Initiative Funds and the Crawford County Community Endowment Fund to purchase educational materials for the program.

We would “love” this a million times if we could. Last month our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) members from Presque Isle County teamed up with CFNEM Vice President and Rogers City Mayor Scott McLennan to volunteer at the Presque Isle District Library and Rogers City Downtown Development Authority’s Free Family Christmas Program. They served cookies and cocoa and helped usher people to their seats for a showing of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. We love when our YAC and Board members team up in the community!

If you or someone you know is looking for a seasonal or temporary job, the U.S. Census Bureau is hiring. These positions vary in job responsibilities and range from $14-$21 per hour. Not only will this job provide a paycheck, but you’ll be helping to ensure a fair and accurate count in the 2020 U.S. Census, which is a big deal for northeast Michigan. Visit https://2020census.gov/en/jobs for information and to apply.

A party with Smokey the Bear, Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, the Alcona Tiger and Snow White? Yes please! Late this summer, the Michigan DNR, Forest Service, Alcona County Sheriff’s Department and local fire departments collaborated to spread wildfire prevention education and environmental education through Smokey’s birthday party, which was attended by quite a few celebrity guests. A Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC) grant to the Eastern National Forest Interpretive Association supported Smokey’s party, which was attended by many children during the Alcona County Fair.
