The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM) is accepting grant applications from nonprofits and community groups who can help “get out the count” for the upcoming 2020 U.S. Census. Up to $2,500 can be requested for projects and programs that will reach traditionally undercounted populations in Iosco County, and through northeast Michigan, helping to ensure a more complete count in our communities. Grants will be awarded for projects that help reach such populations as minorities, youth, families with young children, households with no internet access, senior citizens, homeless, homebound, immigrants, isolated individuals, low-income families, and other traditional hard-to-count populations. They may also be used to promote awareness and to create outreach activities centered on Census response. Visit iccf-online.org to apply. More →

This was today's board meeting! We got to visit a recent grantee, the Pegasus Springs Therapeutic Riding Center in National City in Iosco County. We got a chance to tour the facility and learn all about what the center is doing to help people in our community and beyond. We also got to see first-hand what the ICCF grant helped to do at the center. What a great visit! More →

“Today was the best day ever. I can’t remember having this much fun at school.” Real words from Oscoda Area Schools students. A grant from the Iosco County Community Foundation provided funds for a fun day as a reward for doing well on MSTEP and NWEA tests. Organizers say the most important outcome of this project was that it really seemed to provide the incentive the children needed to put in a tremendous effort. Kudos to the teacher in the dunk tank! It’s birding season! (Even if we did just get a load of spring snow.) Get out and enjoy! These pictures are from the AuSable Valley Audubon's Kirtland Warbler tour, which was funded with the help of an Iosco County Community Foundation grant. Did you know the Kirtland Warbler’s habitat is incredibly specific? They live in jack pines that are 4 to 20 years old and whose seeds require fire to release their cones. This federally endangered bird lives mainly in northeast Michigan and southern Ontario, spending its winters in the Bahamas. More →

Over $10,000 in grants is going out to youth programs in Iosco County through a recent round of grants! The Iosco County Youth Advisory Council (YAC) awarded nine grants to support winter clothing items for children in their communities, to help support victims of child abuse, to support their fellow youth in Special Olympics and in local soccer programs, and several others. Our YAC is able to award these grants each year through the endowed Iosco County Kellogg Youth Fund at ICCF. More →

When the Iosco Regional Educational Service Agency (IRESA) set a goal to get 100 children in Alcona and Iosco Counties registered for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, they exceeded it, big time! Because of their efforts, and through the help of grants, including one from the Community Foundation, over 310 children under the age of 5 in those counties are getting an age-appropriate book in the mail each month. Parents whose kids are enrolled in the program say their kids are so excited each month when their new books arrive in the mailbox! What a great way to get kids pumped up about books! More →

“A young boy came to our building with his mother a while ago. He told us the other kids made fun of him and his clothes. His coat was ripped front to back with white insulation hanging out. He had no socks, holey jeans, and his shoes had soles separated from the uppers so they flapped when he walked. He left a while later with new boots, new shoes, a coat, gloves and socks, hat and snow pants. His little face was beaming, and he said he couldn’t wait to get to school to show off his new clothes!” That’s a real story from a volunteer at Iosco County Coats for Kids. A recent report from the Michigan Association of United Ways shows that an average of 46% of households in Iosco County are unable to afford basic needs, whether for an individual, or for a family. This is just one reason why organizations like Iosco County Coats for Kids is so important in our area. Despite the name, this nonprofit is providing winter essentials for children of all ages in Iosco, Ogemaw and Alcona Counties. More →
