The North Central Michigan Community Endowments - Your Biggest Impact, and Why it Matters

Your Biggest Impact

Wednesday, April 1, 2020

Today is Census Day! If you haven’t already completed the U.S. 2020 Census, make sure it’s high on your priority list. It is important that every person who calls Michigan “home” is counted. The results of these nine questions (and about only ten minutes of your time) will affect the next decade and beyond for our region. Census data is used to allocate funding to communities for things like Medicaid, school lunch programs, roads, broadband internet access, WIC, hospital funding, government representation, and so many more. You count, so be counted. #BeCountedNortheastMI #MIVoiceCounts

Such a cool grant from our Straits Area Community Foundation affiliate! $1,000 to North Country Community Mental Health helped purchase therapeutic sun lights for clients suffering from low levels of vitamin D from lack of sunlight, leading to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This helped people in Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City with SAD’s symptoms like oversleeping, trouble concentrating, depression and social withdrawal. The funds also helped NCCMH to purchase a bicycle for this young man so he could get to work.

If you haven’t already received something from the U.S. Census Bureau for the 2020 survey, you will likely get something soon. Did you know you can complete the survey online, by phone, or by mail? Let’s get Northeast Michigan counted! There are nine questions; it takes about ten minutes; and it will help shape the future of our region. #BeCountedNortheastMichigan #MIVoiceCounts

The Cheboygan County United Way will close its doors and transfer its remaining assets to our Straits Area Community Foundation affiliate to help Cheboygan residents.

“While it is unfortunate that Cheboygan County United Way is closing its doors, thankfully SACF exists in the Straits area, as it is the organization best positioned to ensure their mission is carried out in Cheboygan County even though the nonprofit itself is being dissolved,” said Straits Area Community Foundation and Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan Executive Director Patrick Heraghty. “SACF, its $2.5 million in assets, and its grants are overseen by a local group of citizens from the Straits area who will ensure these funds are used wisely and effectively.”

Our Response to COVID-19:

The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan is fortunate to be part of a caring, generous, and resilient community. The health and safety of our partners, staff, and neighbors is always our top priority. With that in mind, we’ve taken several steps to address the challenges imposed by the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Those steps are outlined below. We will provide additional updates and recommendations in the days ahead via email, through our we...bsite, and on our Facebook page.

We encourage all of our friends to closely monitor updates and review valuable health and safety resources from the State of Michigan, Michigan Health Departments, and Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Additionally, we encourage you to support local nonprofit organizations that work with the people and families who are most vulnerable in our communities. In times like these, philanthropy can make a big difference close to home.

Based on recommendations from public health officials related to social distancing, several of our staff members will be working remotely, starting Monday, March 16th. Although our offices remain open and staffed, we encourage the use of phone and email communications over in-person visits at this time to help protect our community and stop the spread of the virus. Grant processing and distribution of grants will continue. We will continue to review the situation and make decisions as needed. When appropriate, we will return to our normal course of business.

Thank you for your support, strength, and generosity in these unprecedented times. Stay informed, healthy, and safe. Take good care.

Patrick Heraghty, Executive Director

Coming to Cheboygan!

The popular "Board Basics" sessions of the Regional Nonprofit Leaders Series is a favorite for a reason: It helps board members learn effective ways to be the best decision-maker and representative for their organization. In cooperation with Huron Pines, Otsego Community Foundation and our Straits Area Community Foundation affiliate, we are happy to bring the next "Board Basics" to Cheboygan County on April 3, 2020. Reserve your spot for $25 at https://huronpines.org/…/regional-nonprofit-leaders-series…/.

Already been to "Board Basics"? Then be sure to mark your calendar for "Beyond Board Basics" in Gaylord on April 30!

If you give a donation, chances are you want it to be meaningful and to make an impact, right?

The Biggest Impact, and Why it Matters:
You are a change-maker. You believe in our communities, and you want to make them better. We feel the same way. As your Community Foundation, we spend every day working to improve the lives of all who live in and visit northeast Michigan. The Community Impact Fund at the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM), and those of our af...filiate foundations, are built from donations from hundreds of people who care about our communities. They allow your gift to do the most good, sustaining and building a vibrant region by giving us the unique opportunity and flexibility to meet the needs of our communities as they change and evolve year after year. Over $130,000 is awarded annually from this fund through our Community Impact grant programs. As these funds grow through additional donations and investment income, their grants will increase as well.

We believe whole-heartedly in the power of endowment as the best way to provide much needed funding in support of our communities for the needs of today, tomorrow and for generations to come. Years from now, this fund will be supporting needs in our communities we can't even imagine today. Your donation to the Community Impact Fund, no matter the size, is a gift that will continue to provide funding for our communities forever.
