The Boys & Girls Club of Alpena Youth Volunteer Corp completed 137 volunteer projects, despite the pandemic. Program coordinators say one of the most impactful projects was when the teens built birdfeeders for residents of Turning Brook in Alpena – a project funded through a CFNEM Youth Advisory Council (YAC) grant.

“The youth came up with plans and had a solid reasoning for the completion of the project. They also received a lot of positive feedback from the community members, residents and staff of Turning Brook. They provided a sense of normalcy and happiness to the residents of Turning Brook during a pandemic, which was a very huge accomplishment,” says Catherine Knoch of the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena.

Other YVC projects included cleaning up McRae Park, building garden beds, and donating canned foods to local food pantries.

A $3,500 Community Impact grant helped the Rogers City Police Department to replace inoperable and obsolete in-car patrol cameras.
Rogers City Chief of Police Jamie Meyer says that digital camera files can be an imperative piece of evidence during an investigation and prosecution of an offender when convincing a judge or jury of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. He says digital evidence has and will continue to make a difference for all citizens they serve.

Did you know that the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan is accredited by National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations? That matters because it me...ans that basically, our house is in order. The way your donations are handled, our grant processes, fund and asset management, board and committee activities, and our governing policies, all meet the high standards required to obtain this seal. The process to become accredited is quite rigorous, and we are proud that CFNEM and our affiliate foundations (Straits Area Community Foundation, Iosco County Community Foundation and North Central Michigan Community Foundation) rise to the challenge. We hope it makes you feel proud and confident too!

The past year’s challenges have definitely made our YAC program look different this year with some meeting virtually, and others able to meet after school for grantmaking meetings. We are grateful for all of our YACs! These are our Mackinaw City YAC members from the Straits Area Community Foundation, after their most recent grant meeting where they awarded over $3,300 in youth grants. (If you know of a youth-related project in Cheboygan County and/or Mackinaw City that needs funding, the next SACF YAC grant deadline is coming up quick on March 15.)

Cheers to our North Central Michigan Community Foundation affiliate board, which continues to meet virtually to get business done! Last night they approved some grant recommendations, talked about annual reports and scholarships, and brainstormed some ideas to help our Youth Advisory Councils. Having these local leaders represent their communities is a win for all, and we thank them!
