A Community Impact Grant from our Straits Area Community Foundation Affiliate provided funding to help Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity hold its annual Project Connect event. The pandemic forced planners to adapt so the event could be held successfully. In 2021, Project Connect was held on the same day as the Salvation Army’s food distribution so food, energy assistance packets and personal hygiene items could be handed out to those attending. There were also many who attended to have their children’s car seats inspected for safety. This grant is a great example of how SACF’s Community Impact Grants and the power of endowment can address needs in our communities as they change and evolve year to year. https://www.cheboygannews.com/story/news/2021/10/19/connecting-residents-services/8520057002/

A $1,200 outreach project of HeadWaters Land Conservancy to Presque Isle County land owners was funded with help from a CFNEM grant from the O.B. Eustice Fund. That project has led to the acquisition and conservation of five new land projects. Dianne Farner of HeadWaters LC says, “Once these projects are completed, an additional 500 acres of land will be protected forever from development and improper land management.” She says this project facilitated meeting a conservation-passionate landowner who was born and raised in Michigan and whose family has a few rustic cottages on Lake Huron. After spending most of his life living in Hawaii, he returned to Michigan to live full-time in one of the cottages he is remodeling. In doing so, he also acquired significant land around the cottage full of coastal fens and dune and swale complexes (pictured here). The land owner is currently working with HWLC to preserve more than 80 acres, and hopes to eventually hold hikes and educational events on the property.

What a cool race experience! Friends of Negwegon State Park’s Beacon to Bay Half Marathon was a huge success this year. The race featured a half marathon, 10k and 5k courses. Depending on the race, runners enjoyed the scenic views of the Lake Huron shoreline from Sturgeon Point Lighthouse in Harrisville to Negwegon State Park in Black River. A grant to Friends of Negwegon State Park provided funds to hold the race and pancake breakfast. Those sand trails look tough!
