The North Central Michigan Community Endowments - Your Biggest Impact, and Why it Matters

Your Biggest Impact

Wednesday, August 28, 2019

The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM) is accepting grant applications from nonprofits and community groups who can help “get out the count” for the upcoming 2020 U.S. Census. Up to $2,500 can be requested for projects and programs that will reach traditionally undercounted populations in northeast Michigan, helping to ensure a more complete count in our communities. Grants will be awarded for projects that help reach such populations as minorities, youth, families with young children, households with no internet access, senior citizens, homeless, homebound, immigrants, isolated individuals, low-income families, and other traditional hard-to-count populations. They may also be used to promote awareness and to create outreach activities centered on Census response. Visit cfnem.org to apply. More →

Great memories and educational too! These students from northern Michigan took on the challenge of an authentic curriculum via international travels to Germany, Austria and Switzerland this summer. Their trip included pre-travel lessons in European culture and safety, and ended with unique learning experiences the students will never forget. A Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (YAC) grant supported this project. More →

You may see “YAC” a lot in our posts. But what is YAC? Across northeast Michigan, over 200 young people serve in our Youth Advisory Councils (or YACs) as youth grantmakers. The decisions they make on grant funding touch nearly every corner of our service area, all supporting their fellow youth. They represent 19 different schools, nine counties, and over $150,000 in annual grantmaking. It’s one of the largest programs of the Community Foundation, and is building future generations of philanthropists. And what’s with YAC members Jenna Peterson and Evan Carlson holding a yak? Well, you’ll find out in good time. 😉🐃 More →

Two staff members of the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center (NMCAC) recently attended a national training in Boston, Mass. to learn skills they can use to better support and treat victims of child sexual abuse, as well as to provide community education centered on trauma. It's not fun to think or talk about, but the need is very real and significant in our communities. Hats off to NMCAC for their work to help children in northeast Michigan, and to the youth in our North Central Michigan Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council (YAC) who recognize the need, and supported this training through a YAC grant.
