7 7 7 Iosco County Philanthropist of the year The Iosco County Community FoundaƟon (ICCF) aims each year to honor an unsung hero who makes an impact in Iosco County through their me, talents and charitable contribu ons. In 2016, ICCF honored Tawas City resident Brad Saegesser as its Philanthropist of the Year. Brad has been heavily involved in many local programs and projects, including Special Olympics of Michigan and its Water Warriors program. He has also been a large part of the Tawas Elks service projects, including events for Rachel’s Challenge (an an -bullying program), the East Tawas Community Garden, 4-H Excep onal Equestrians and several more. Straits Area Community Foundation Scholarship Provides Opportunity for Maritime Studies The Raymond Plaunt Mari me Memorial Scholarship was established through the Straits Area Community FoundaƟon in February 2016. Reflec ng a growing trend among new scholarships being created, the award is open to gradua ng seniors and non-tradi onal students who plan to pursue an educa on in any field of mari me studies. The fund was established in memory of Raymond A. Plaunt. At the young age of 12, Mr. Plaunt began working on boats with his father, transpor ng passengers and supplies to Bois Blanc Island, several miles off Cheboygan County’s shoreline in Lake Huron. A lifelong resident of Bois Blanc Island, he spent his life working on the Great Lakes, and was the boat Captain and owner of his family business, Plaunt Transporta on. The Raymond Plaunt Mari me Memorial Scholarship was created by friends, family and colleagues to honor his legacy and his love of northern Michigan’s lakes and its mari me industry. 7
