CHEBOYGAN—The Straits Area Community Foundation (SACF) recently awarded its 2024 Community Impact Grants covering Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City. The Board of Trustees approved eight grants totaling $15,500 to local nonprofits on August 7, 2024.
New SACF Community Impact Grants were awarded to:
- $2,000 to the Cheboygan Area Arts Council for the “Doktor Kaboom: The Science of Santa” science show, co-presented with the Great Lakes Center for the Arts, performing at the Cheboygan Opera House on December 17, 2024, at no cost to schools or students in grades 2-5;
- $2,000 to the Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity for its “Cheboygan Home Rehab” project on the west side of town where they’ll improve two existing lots and move a home to be rehabbed and sold through their Homeownership Program;
- $1,500 to Child and Family Services of Northwest Michigan for their “Homeward Bound: Supporting Parent/Child Reunification” project for natural parents in/from Cheboygan County working toward reunification with children in foster care while enrolled in their Family Time Coaching program, also funding staff to drive foster children to and from supervised parental visits and physical and mental healthcare appointments;
- $2,000 to the Church of the Straits for its “Church of the Straits Community Food Pantry” providing nutritional food, personal items and clothing to those in need;
- $2,000 to Cornerstone Christian School to establish a Music Program for students of their school;
- $2,000 to Michigan Arts Access for the “Cheboygan Artist-in-Residence” program which will provide visual art and music instruction in the three Cheboygan-Otsego-Presque Isle Educational Service District classrooms in Cheboygan, enhancing the education of students and youth ages 4-24, many of whom come from low-income homes and do not have access to learning and participation in the arts;
- $2,000 to the Straits Area Services to purchase supplies and food items for its “Adult Enrichment” project; and
- $2,000 to the Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan for direct financial assistance to students from Mackinaw City and Cheboygan County participating in their “Education and Employment Services for Underserved Women of the Straits Area”.
SACF awards Community Impact Grants once a year, with applicants applying for specific needs within their organization. Funding for grants during this cycle comes from SACF’s Straits Area Community Needs Fund, Cheboygan Health and Education Fund, and the Straits Area Tobacco Settlement Fund.
The next opportunity for submitting grant applications through SACF is through the Straits Area Youth Advisory Council (YAC). The application deadline is December 15, 2024. These grants are for youth-related projects and programs serving Cheboygan County and/or Mackinaw City. Applications are available at sacf.net.
