That’s a lot of personal care items, set to help out a lot of people in need. With 15.8% of northern Michigan’s population living under the poverty line, programs that provide basic human needs are incredibly important. A recent Community Impact grant from our North Central Michigan Community Foundation affiliate provided funding to purchase plenty of items and medical equipment for the Ogemaw Hills Free Clinic’s Personal Care Closet. Clinic staff told us of a woman who came to the facility looking for medical equipment for her elderly mother. When she asked about assistance with personal care items, “the look of relief on her face spoke volumes. She shared how her mom was out of shampoo and other basic items due to her financial struggle. With both the medical equipment and the personal care items we were able to provide, her mom's financial burden was relieved a wee bit - and she walked away with a few less things to worry about. “ More →

Audie's Restaurant in Mackinaw City is committed to supporting its communities long term by providing scholarships to local students each year through their Audie's Open Scholarship Fund through our affiliate, the Straits Area Community Foundation. It sounds like there are still a few tickets left if you're looking for a way to have a great time and support a good cause this weekend! http://www.cheboygannews.com/news/20180110/scholarship-ball-set-for-jan-13 More →

A rich lesson in history, a musical and authentic deep dish pizza…that was the great experience students from Onaway High School had on a trip to Chicago to see the production of “Hamilton”. A $1,000 Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC) grant provided funding to make the trip a reality, giving students who might not otherwise have the opportunity, the chance to visit Chicago. Teachers were also able to use the trip to teach important historical lessons about the Constitutional Convention, the Federalist Papers and the Electoral College. More →

A Community Foundation grant through our Youth Advisory Council provided funding to Mikado Township to host the community event. 177 children attended, getting to visit with Santa, spend time with family and enjoy Christmas treats. Alpena High School math students are integrating technology more and more into daily education. A $1,750 Community Foundation YAC grant to Alpena Public Schools provided funding to purchase Chromebooks for students, who have commented that they appreciate this way of learning because it “makes it way less stressful for us to learn at our own pace.” Teacher Melissa Jarema says the students are using technology to learn by interactive video and websites, and also learning how to create meaningful projects and videos themselves. “They can respond to questions I give in class and I can get a quick, clear picture of if the class understands the material, or if I need to do some remediation,” Melissa says. Give a like for our Straits Area Youth Advisory Council! These kids spent time this week volunteering at the Wolverine Senior Center’s annual Christmas party. Both the YAC members and the adults have a great time together, with the YACers helping out in different shifts throughout the evening. Community service is one of the main pillars emphasized through our youth advisory council programs, in addition to leadership, grantmaking and philanthropy. We’re proud of our YACers and hope you are too! More →

We are so proud of our Youth Advisory Councils (YACs)! This YAC from Oscoda County in our North Central Michigan Community Foundation affiliate served His Love Family Resources Center on November 30, helping them set up their Christmas store for families needing help with gifts for their children. Throughout the year the Center collects quality used toys and books, as well as donated new toys. YAC Advisor Kevin Salsbury says, “We carried box after box and relocated shelving so that a toy-packed mini-store would be able to be opened December 12 to the families they serve. Some students sorted toys, other replaced batteries, while others stocked the shelves and arranged the many books that would be available.” What a great way to give back! So far the center has had 51 families come gathering gifts for 108 children. More →

What’s influencing and affecting youth the most in Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City? According to the most recent Youth Needs Assessment conducted every three years by the Straits Area Youth Advisory Council (a program of the Community Foundation), the top three issues are mental health and depression, suicide and bullying. The first two of those issues moved up on the list significantly over the 2015 survey. Our three other Youth Advisory Councils are the final stages of completing their updated surveys too. The Straits Area YAC will use this updated assessment to guide their grantmaking for the next three years. You can check out the full survey results here: http://www.cfnem.org/userfiles/filemanager/dnmlwnrg7yvxguzzdorz/ More →

Arts, education, human services and literacy programs are just some of the areas touched by the most recent round of grants from the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC). $30,182 in grant funding was awarded by NEMYAC this month to support other youth in Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle County. Youth Advisory Council programs teach young people the importance of philanthropy and community service through grantmaking and leadership opportunities. We love our YACers!
