Alpena, MI—A new partnership between conservation nonprofit Huron Pines and the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM) will bring new training opportunities to nonprofits in the Alpena area. The first session being hosted is “Board Basics” on Thursday, April 19 in Alpena which will include an introduction to the roles and responsibilities of board members and provide a strong understanding of board governance and the skills necessary to lead an organization to success.
“We are committed to supporting our local nonprofits in capacity-building and professional development as part of our strategic plan, and as a philanthropic leader in our communities,” said CFNEM Executive Director Patrick Heraghty. “This is all through a new partnership with Huron Pines and Otsego County Community Foundation to offer the Regional Nonprofit Leaders Series, which will bring more training opportunities to our area.”
“Our partnership with CFNEM and our ability to reach a wider audience is an exciting development for Huron Pines,” said Abigail Ertel, Community Program Lead with Huron Pines. “Helping to facilitate these collaborative learning opportunities is a way for us, as a conservation organization, to offer support and build partnerships with local organizations so that we can take a more inclusive approach to protecting our natural places and provide meaningful benefit to the people and communities where we serve.”
Alex Cerveniak, President of the Headwaters Chapter of Trout Unlimited, has been sending board members to the Board Basics workshop every year since its inception. “This isn't just a program for new board members," Cerveniak said. "Board members and officers who have been on our board for many years, or who have been on other nonprofit boards in the past, have all come back with a clearer sense of what their roles are and how to be effective. The Board Basics workshop is a fantastic program, and as far as we're concerned, it is a must for any nonprofit board members or officers.”
The “Board Basics” Workshop in Alpena is from 10am-1pm at Alpena Community College in Alpena in CTR #106. Pre-registration is required by contacting Huron Pines at rsvp@huronpines.org or 989-448-2293 ext. 21. Tickets are $20 per person.
Current or prospective board members and executive directors from across Northeast Michigan can take advantage of this training session led by NorthSky Nonprofit Network’s Julie Ann Rivers-Cochran. “Board Basics” is an interactive learning and networking event which will provide attendees of all experience levels the opportunity to explore and understand roles and responsibilities of board members; discuss and understand the different phases of an organization’s lifecycle and identify their organization’s current phase; and provide practical tools to keep the board excited about their work and motivated to plan for the future.
For those who cannot attend the April 19th training in Alpena, the same session is being offered on April 18 in Gaylord. RSVPs for both sessions should be directed to Huron Pines.
