ALPENA – The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM) is accepting applications for its 2018 competitive scholarship season.
Scholarship opportunities through CFNEM are based on a wide variety of criteria including the student’s high school, year of graduation, college they plan to attend, or their planned field of study. Additionally, some scholarships are for students who have already graduated from high school, and also for those planning to attend a certificate program or trade school. To be eligible, students must complete the application by the April 2 deadline.
“The Community Foundation awarded over $400,000 in scholarships in 2017,” said CFNEM Program Director Julie Wiesen. “This year, we will be awarding scholarships from many different funds, and several scholarships will be awarded for the first time. Our donors take great pride in opening doors to area students through scholarships.”
Wiesen says scholarships are available for students throughout the CFNEM service area, as well as its affiliate foundations: the Iosco County Community Foundation, the North Central Michigan Community Foundation, and the Straits Area Community Foundation.
New scholarships, or those being awarded for the first time this year, include the Professional Trade Scholarship, the Raymond Plaunt Maritime Memorial Scholarship, the Donnelly Education Scholarship, and the Addison Bushey Memorial Nursing Scholarship.
Wiesen says that while most of the awards are for one year of study, many of the available scholarships are multiple-year awards or renewable scholarships.
Scholarship applicants should visit the “Scholarships” section of the Community Foundation’s website at www.cfnem.org. Many scholarships use an online application system, with only one application needed for numerous awards. Additionally, many scholarships use an alternative application procedure. Full details of each scholarship’s application criteria can be found online.
Scholarships awarded during the 2018 competitive scholarship program are for the 2018-19 academic year, and are paid directly to the educational institution the student has chosen. The application deadline for all CFNEM scholarships, as well as most scholarships through its affiliate foundations, is April 2, 2018.
