ALPENA—The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM) recently awarded a new round of community grants covering a four-county area that includes Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle Counties. The Board of Trustees recently approved 59 new grants totaling $84,002. Of that amount, $61,281 was awarded in Community Impact Grants and $22,721 was awarded in grants from the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC). Grants were approved on March 14, 2017.
New Community Impact Grants are:
- Alcona County – awarded $1,352 for the ARA Farm Market /Good for All project.
- Alcona County Library – awarded $395 for the Portable Sound System project.
- Alcona-Iosco Cedar Lake Association – awarded $500 for the Safety Signs project.
- Curtis Township Library – awarded $500 for the Outdoor Learning Center (Labyrinth) project.
- Mitten Women Productions, Inc. – awarded $1,000 for the Mindjimendamowin Documentary Film.
- Harrisville United Methodist Church – awarded $1,000 for the Fellowship Hall Floor/Ceiling Replacement project.
- Alcona St. Vincent DePaul – awarded $2,102 for the Freezer Replacement project.
- Hillman Elementary School – awarded $350 for the Mindful Me Project.
- Hillman Elementary School – awarded $1,000 for the Mackinaw Island Field Trip.
- Atlanta Church of Christ – awarded $1,500 for the Caring Place Food project.
- Presque Isle District Library – awarded $2,000 for the Music Celebrates Culture project.
- Posen Consolidated Schools – awarded $2,000 for the Keep Posen Safe project.
- Presque Isle Township Fire Dept. – awarded $5,000 for Presque Isle Fire Equipment.
- Posen Consolidated School District – awarded $1,500 for Laptops for the Media Center.
- Northern Family Intervention Services – awarded $1,000 for the Keeping Presque Isle Families Together program.
- Presque Isle County Historical Museum, Inc. – awarded $1,000 for Painting the Bradley House and Garage.
- Presque Isle County – awarded $1,500 for the Ocqueoc Outdoor Center Kitchen Stabilization project.
- NE MI Community Partnership/Partners in Prevention – awarded $296 for Developing Trauma Informed Schools.
- Alpena Public Schools/AHS – awarded $650 for the Wildcat Robotics VEX League.
- Mid-Michigan Medical Center – awarded $250 for the Reach Out and Read program.
- Alpena County Courthouse – awarded $500 for the Phase I Alpena County Courthouse Surveillance/Security project.
- Alpena Child Abuse & Neglect Team – awarded $1,000 for the Car Seat Education Partnership project.
- MI Dept. of Health/Human Svcs – awarded $1,000 for the Foster Home/Relative Caregiver Safety Kits project.
- Alcona Citizens for Health/Children’s Advocacy Center – awarded $1,000 for the Professional Development Conference.
- Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary – awarded $1,500 for the 2017 Great Lakes Regional MATE ROV Competition.
- NEMI Community Partnership/Partners in Prevention – awarded $1,000 for the Technology Upgrade project.
- APS/AHS Art Program – awarded $1,000 for Restoration of the Jewelry Program.
- Thunder Bay River Restoration, Inc. – awarded $1,500 for the Thunder Bay River Recreation Improvement Project.
- Friends of Alpena Farmer’s Market – awarded $1,000 for the Community Awareness project.
- Alpena Symphony Orchestra – awarded $2,500 for the Instrument and Equipment Campaign.
- APS/AHS Band Boosters – awarded $2,500 for AHS Band Uniforms.
- Temple Beth El – awarded $1,000 toward the Exterior Restoration and Preservation project.
- Thunder Bay River Center, Inc. – awarded $1,000 toward the River Center Architectural Fees.
- Alpena Public Schools – awarded $1,000 for the Wildcat Training Table Cats in the Kitchen project.
- Catholic Human Services, Inc. – awarded $1,000 for the Therapeutic Space Improvement project.
- Shelter, Inc.(Hope Shores Alliance) – awarded $2,636 for the Access to Meaningful Civil Legal Justice project.
- NE MI Center for Fine Arts, Inc./Art in the Loft – awarded $2,500 for the Annual Young Artist Exhibit.
- National American Red Cross – awarded $250 for the Home Fire Campaign.
- Child and Family Services of NE MI – awarded $1,000 for the Parent Mentor Program.
- McLaren Northern MI Foundation/Rogers City Family Medicine – awarded $3,000 for the Fresh Start Tobacco Cessation Program.
- NE MI Rehabilitation and Opportunity Center (NEMROC) – awarded $2,500 for the NEMROC Cigarette Litter Brigade.
- NEMROC – awarded $2,500 for the Let’s Be Better Next Year (Smoking Cessation and Healthy Habits) project.
- Faith Outreach – awarded $500 for the Free at Last From Nicotine project.
- Boys and Girls Club of Alpena – awarded $3,000 for the S.M.A.R.T. Moves project.
Community Impact Grants are awarded through three different grant cycles throughout the year. Funding for grants during this cycle comes from CFNEM’s Community Endowment Fund (which also includes the Genite Family Fund, Chuck and Kathy Ingle Fund, Lappan Fund, Neva Nelson Memorial Fund, Panel Processing Fund, Reitz Family Fund, Stevens Fund, Weinkauf Fund, and the Wilson Family Fund) and the Tobacco Settlement Fund.
Also approved on March 14 were grants that were recommended for approval by the Youth Advisory Councils of Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle Counties. 15 grants totaling $22,721 were awarded and include:
- Alcona Community Schools – awarded $300 for the Magnet Pull project.
- Alcona Community Schools – awarded $230 for the “You can do WHAT with a Whiteboard?” project.
- Alcona Community Schools – awarded $500 for the FIRST Robotics Team shirts.
- Eastern National Forest Interpretive Association – awarded $2,500 for the Sprinkler Lake Day Camp.
- Mikado Township – awarded $291 for the Youth Fire Safety project.
- Alpena Public Schools – awarded $2,500 for Chromebooks for 6th Grade Math.
- Alpena Public Schools – awarded $2,500 for the Masquers Thunder Bay Theatre Project.
- Alpena Public Schools – awarded $2,500 for AHS Band Concert Uniforms.
- Alpena Public Schools – awarded $2,500 for the Jewelry Restoration project.
- Alpena Symphony Orchestra – awarded $2,500 for String School Equipment and Music.
- Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary – awarded $2,500 for the 2017 Great Lakes Regional MATE ROV Competition
- Atlanta Community Schools – awarded $2,500 for the Leveled Reading Library project.
- Hillman Community Schools – awarded $500 for the Spanish II Cultural Field Trip.
- Posen Consolidated School District – awarded $400 for sheet music and microphone stands.
- Posen Consolidated School District – awarded $500 for the Senior Trip project.
