As parents, grandparents and a community, it is our job to help the young people in our lives grow to be kind, caring, compassionate individuals. Giving Tuesday can be a great way to involve children in meaningful giving that affects their community. So here’s an idea: try providing kids with a “giving allowance” for Giving Tuesday, and then letting them choose which nonprofits they want to support on November 30th It’s a great start in learning to GIVE! #givingtuesdaynemi #philanthropistsintraining

We are currently recruiting for the fourth session of the Leadership Learning Lab (LLL), which combines adaptive leadership, time management, and a suite of nonprofit and cross-sector capacity-building skills. It also aims to create a network of support for changemakers and invests directly in cross-sector leaders to strengthen their organizations and the communities they serve. A mix of virtual and in-person monthly sessions begin in January 2022. Participating nonprofits will only be required to put forth $150 of the $1,500 cost for participation. The remaining cost is covered through a grant from the Frey Foundation, with additional support from partnering community foundations. For northeast Michigan in particular, that includes the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan, Otsego Community Foundation and Roscommon County Community Foundation. To learn more about the program visit https://www.rotarycharities.org/leadership-learning-lab or contact info@cfnem.org. Potential participants should submit an application by December 1.

This grant will help save lives. A $5,000 CFNEM Community Impact grant to the Presque Isle Township Fire Department helped purchase new battery-powered extrication equipment, replacing old, outdated equipment. Its greater flexibility and portability will benefit neighboring departments as well.

A recent CFNEM Youth Advisory Council (YAC) grant to Onaway Area Schools provided funds for students in a STEM class to set up a full saltwater ecosystem. Students built and set up the tank, researched and set up the aquascaping, built a proper biological filtration system, and populated the tank with organisms that will live harmoniously with one another. Even students who aren’t in that class are stopping by to check it out. Very cool project!

Rogers City Manager Joe Hefele says says a $2,000 CFNEM grant to the City allowed the Rogers City Downtown Authority to continue its popular summer concert series at the Lakeside Park band shell in 2021. He says that in previous years, a majority of the costs associated with the concert series were covered by area businesses. However, in 2021 many of the local businesses were digging themselves out of financial holes caused by Covid-19. This put the concert series in jeopardy, but the grant through CFNEM helped ensure the concerts would continue to take place on Friday nights throughout the summer.
