“Meet the Staff” Monday! Meet Finance Director DeeAnn Karos. DeeAnn has been with CFNEM for 10 years, and she can help you with just about any question related to the Community Foundation’s numbers. Every single donation made by our incredibly generous donors is accounted for by DeeAnn. What’s DeeAnn’s favorite part of her job? “I help give away money for a living!” she says. DeeAnn is a graduate of Lake Superior State University, and before working full time in accounting for CFNEM, she was helping to milk cows on a dairy farm. She and her husband Wade love spending time with kids Amber, Jade and Wade Jr., and their four dogs, Kyah, Haydn, Mika, Chloe and DeeAnn’s horse, Woodrow. A few fun things about DeeAnn: Where haven’t you traveled that you would love to go? “Out west!” Hobbies: “Horseback riding, riding the Harley, hunting, fishing, walking and exercising.” Favorite ice cream flavor: “Cherry chip.” What is one thing about you that might surprise people? “I sit on a pillow to see over the steering wheel of my truck!” DeeAnn Karos More →

Everyone loves a good "before and after", right? Check out the newly renovated theater room at YMCA Camp Nissokone in Oscoda. A grant through the Iosco County Community Foundation helped fund this project. From project coordinator Ryan Mertz: "This renovation added roughly 3,000 sq ft of usable indoor space, transforming a dark storage room into a functional, comfortable lakeside conference room & teen leadership space. We're very excited about the opportunities this space provides as a resource for growth, both in leadership development for youth and our improved ability to host group retreats and conferences. We're already receiving positive feedback from our partner groups who are eagerly looking forward to utilizing the space. We will continue to showcase this space to current and prospective groups to capitalize on the momentum and energy surrounding the improvement." More →

Have you ever heard of European Frog-bit? This aggressively spreading plant grows into a mat of tiny lily pads, damaging wildlife along the shore and impeding people’s recreational activities, like boating. A $1,500 Community Impact Grant to Huron Pines provided funding for the 2016 Frog-Bit Challenge, which gathered 75 Alpena students and volunteers to help remove over 10,000 pounds of the invasive species from the Thunder Bay Watershed. Cool project! More →

“Because of H20, I feel comfortable in my own skin.” That’s a quote directly from a participant in one of our grantees’ programs. This particular member of Helping to Overcome (H20) could barely make eye contact with people before participating, and now she “holds her head high and smiles all the time.” H20 recently helped 20 Tawas area youth participate in experiential learning opportunities, active community services, and leadership skills-building projects. Much of this was with help from an Iosco County Youth Advisory Council (YAC) grant and other community support. More →
