One of the best signs that someone supports an organization 100% is if they care enough to give in many different ways. It couldn’t be more evident than in our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) from Alpena. This group of students from Alpena High School and Thunder Bay Junior High started a campaign earlier this year to build the Kellogg Youth Fund at the Community Foundation. Called “$18 for 2018”, YAC members pledged to talk to 18 people each, suggesting an $18 donation to the Kellogg Youth Fund, which supports their annual grantmaking. So far, they have raised over $200 for the endowment fund, and inspired several other donations as well. We are so very proud of these kids! 2018 isn’t over yet! If you would like to support the Kellogg Youth Fund, and thus, our YACs donate here: http://www.cfnem.org/funds/give.html?fund=605 Some of the YAC members are pictured here doing their spring service project to spruce up the grounds around Thunder Bay Junior High. Libraries are such valuable assets to our communities! The Presque Isle District Library’s Northeast Exposure Music Series was presented April through June this year, and provided concerts for the public at the Rogers City Theater, and performances for elementary school children. The Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan, while a long drive from Northeast Michigan, is helping people from right here in our communities at times when it’s needed the most. When families find themselves needing to be in Grand Rapids to be near a child or other loved one receiving medical care, the Ronald McDonald house provides a place for them to stay, eat, do laundry, and rest while helping to care for their family member. Anyone who has ever had to utilize these services can attest to their importance. Just over $10,000 from a combination of Community Impact and YAC grants from CFNEM and our affiliate foundations, have provided funds specifically to support families from our service area. More →

A new rain garden in West Branch is bringing together community groups and volunteers in a great way. The garden, which is a planted depression that collects rain runoff from buildings, driveways, lawns, and the like, will feature mostly Michigan native plants. This work-in-progress is sure to be beautiful! Grants from our affiliate foundation, the North Central Michigan Community Foundation, as well as Huron Pines and the Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network provided funding for the rain garden.
