Students from Montmorency and Presque Isle Counties had the opportunity to participate in martial arts training through Thunder Bay Martial Arts in Alpena, and also got to show off what they learned during Parents’ Night. A $1,000 CFNEM Community Impact grant provided funding for four students to participate in the program, which gets kids involved in healthy activity and movement, helps to improve concentration and attention, and is shown to improve behavior too. Last week, students in Mrs. DenBleyker’s class at Lincoln Elementary School had the opportunity to interview Patrick Heraghty with questions about Rotary Park Island, the Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (NEMIGLSI) and the Community Foundation. These students have been working with NEMIGLSI to clean up Rotary Island Park this year and rounding up community partners to help them with a butterfly garden project at the park. While he was there, Patrick also had the chance to check out the pink robotics kit provided to the all-girl team at Lincoln Elementary School through a Women’s Giving Circle Grant! More →

Wishing the Alpena Public Schools 8th graders a safe and fun trip today as half the class heads to Ferris State University and Saginaw Valley State University! Through APS and the Alpena Career and College Access Network (ACCAN), these students will take walking tours of the campuses, classrooms, dorms and other buildings, as well as hear a presentation from Admissions staff to get a feel for the path that will lead them to college. The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan is providing funding through a grant for one of the buses, while Besser is providing funding for the other. Have fun kids! More →

Congratulations to the Alpena and Alcona robotics teams who placed 1st and 6th respectively out of 39 teams this weekend in Traverse City. Their work and dedication is leading them to the semi-final competition! We are happy to welcome Lora Greene as the Community Foundation's Board President for 2017! Lora has been on the CFNEM board since 2011. “The Community Foundation has been a pillar of philanthropy in our community for decades, and its impact will only continue to increase,” says Lora. “It has been an honor to sit on the board and serve as an officer, seeing its growth and transformations over the years. Now it’s an even greater honor to serve as the President.
