The North Central Michigan Community Endowments - Your Biggest Impact, and Why it Matters

Your Biggest Impact

Saturday, June 23, 2018

Just a reminder, we have two grant opportunities with deadlines coming up quick! We are accepting grant applications for the summer 2018 grant cycles of our Community Impact Grant, and the Northeast Michigan Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) Grant. All non-profit agencies with a 501(c)(3) IRS designation, schools, churches (for non-religious purposes) and government agencies serving the counties of Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle are invited to apply. Community Impact Grants are for a broad range of projects and programs. The maximum grant request amount is $5,000. The deadline to apply is Monday, July 16. Women’s Giving Circle Grants are for projects and programs that address issues important to women in Northeast Michigan. The maximum grant request amount is $2,000. The deadline to apply for WGC grants is Monday, July 2. Applications and guidelines for both grant opportunities are available at www.cfnem.org where they may be completed online and submitted via email, or printed for completion. If applications are mailed, they must be postmarked by the grant deadline date and sent to the CFNEM office at P.O. Box 495, Alpena, MI 49707. Applicants may also call the Community Foundation office for more information at 1-877-354-6881. More →

The 8th grade curriculum at Thunder Bay Junior High School includes “The Diary of Anne Frank”. What a great opportunity for students to hear from Judy Sima, whose mother escaped Germany during the Holocaust. Project Director Dawn Gentry says the students “were very curious, very engaged, and wanted to know more about it.” The program also included an evening presentation at Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library, with standing room only. A CFNEM grant provided support to the Thunder Bay Arts Council & Gallery to help make the programs happen. More →

Congrats to our 2018 scholarship recipients! Over $500,000 is being awarded this year in scholarships to students from across our nine-county service area! At our 23rd annual recognition luncheon, the crowd heard from keynote speaker, Adam Crowell. His words were incredibly inspiring. It rained cats and dogs on race day, but over 200 girls from northeast Michigan in the Girls on the Run Sunrise Side program ran in the Color Me Awesome 5K. A Northeast Michigan Women's Giving Circle grant helped fund this project. Way to go girls, and kudos to their amazing coaches! More →

Another great program from a grantee in our North Central Michigan Community Foundation affiliate's service area! Families in Oscoda County had the chance to get their creative juices flowing through Oscoda County Library's "Puppets & Poetry" program this spring. "This project ended up being included as part of our new program that serves families with children on the Autism spectrum," said project organizer Beth Barron. "We had a few children attend that are part of this group, and it was awesome to see them participating in ways that they normally would not. The music and the puppets gave them an outlet to express themselves in a new way." More →

What a fun experience for kids at Hinks Elementary to travel to Mackinac Island! This quote from Alicia Gembel is great... "My favorite part of this trip is taking the students to the Grand Hotel. The hotel provides us with a huge buffet, which allows the kids to try foods they never would. We had several decide to try oysters! I can't think of one that liked them, but they tried!" We love the adventurous spirit, kids! We are so proud to be able to support this adventure through a grant! More →

Progress on Alpena’s new Splash Park is moving on-schedule, but a change in State law has left the Rotary Club of Alpena, which has already raised $200K for the project, looking to raise an additional $5,000 to complete the project. If you are interested in helping to reach this $5,000 fundraising goal, you can make a donation to the Rotary Splash Park Fund at http://www.cfnem.org/funds/give.html?fund=957. You can also drop off checks or cash at the Community Foundation at 100 N. Ripley, OR donate cash at Neiman’s Family Market (after 4 p.m. today), where they’ll match first $500! More →

Inspiration Alcona is an organization on the move, and their “Farm to Fork Alcona” events are making big gains in popularity and attendance. Have you been to any of their great events? These photos are from a recent one-day food and farming workshop held at Lost Lake Woods Club. Event organizers hoped to have about 50 people attend, and were thrilled when over 110 registered! This group is also hosting a Food Truck event in Harrisville on July 14. A $2,000 Community Foundation grant provided support for the conference. Kudos to Inspiration Alcona for putting the county's delicious local offerings on the foodie map! More →

We often talk about our “affiliate foundations”. While the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan serves a total of nine counties, five of those are through our affiliate foundations: the Iosco County Community Foundation, the North Central Michigan Community Foundation, and the Straits Area Community Foundation. We serve as the administrative arm for these affiliates, and local leaders in those areas serve as ambassadors, grantmakers, and advocates for their community foundation. And these affiliate foundations represent over $12 million in assets! More →
