Baby care is hard work! And what better way to find that out than through experiential learning? A $1,400 NE MI Youth Advisory Council grant provided funding to purchase three Real-Care dolls for Hillman High School's Psychology of Child Development class. "I heard from a lot of students who are not in the Child Development class that they were amazed at how much work it really was to care for a baby, and were shocked by the amount of time this baby would take from their friends' lives in the short few days each student took the doll home," said Kendra Beebe. Kendra says the class is popular with students, and that using these dolls is making a big difference in many students' lives as they learn the ins and outs of caring for a child. More →

We NEED our fire departments. We wouldn't want to be without them...would you? With the help of a $5,000 Community Impact grant from CFNEM, the Presque Isle Township Fire Department now has some much-needed equipment to help them better serve their communities. Deputy Chief Robert Adrian says this grant “allowed Presque Isle Township Fire Department to purchase some of the most needed tools and equipment for their new fire department. The Presque Isle Township Fire Department was recently created as a municipal fire department and started with literally nothing. A management agreement with the City of Alpena was put in place for creating a new functioning department. The generosity of communities, businesses and citizens throughout the state of Michigan has brought the fire department up to a level that they can begin providing fire protection, rescue and EMS services to their community. The equipment purchased is invaluable to fire department operations and will be used at every fire they respond to.” More →

With over 200 Girls on the Run participants in northeast Michigan this year, and more than 50 volunteer coaches, there have got to be some inspiring stories out there. We'd love to hear yours, and bet lots of others would too! Organizers of Girls on the Run report that one of the greatest gains their participants report is in confidence and connections. This “thank you” letter from a local Girls on the Run participant is proof of those connections. We are proud to support this great program through Community Foundation grants! More →

CFNEM Program Officer Kara Bauer LeMonds had a chance to check out a grantee project this week - Tar Wars! This program of McLaren Northern Michigan was presented to 4th graders at Rogers City Elementary school to teach them about the dangerous health effects of tobacco use. A CFNEM grant provided funding to purchase supplies for these presentations. Kara said the kids were shown a big jar of tar that shows how much tar collects in your body and lungs when you smoke a pack a day for a year. The other was a long plastic tube representing a cigarette with various examples of toxins in it like a lump of tar, a silver nickel, nicotine, cyanide and arsenic (rat poison), ammonia (glass cleaner), a little car (carbon monoxide), fake money (to show how much money you waste). Another prop was a twisty straw to show how are it is to breathe with emphysema. More →

Many thanks to these great folks for their leadership on the CFNEM Board of Trustees! Last night, Sue Fitzpatrick, Jerry Gosnell and Dave Cook completed their terms on the Board, serving for 9 years. Those years have seen an increase in assets from $15 million to $45 million in assets, two strategic plans, over $10 million grants awarded, the move to new headquarters, and the transition of executive directors. Wow! And Mackenzie Zdybel (right) completed her two-year term as our board's youth trustee. Her insight and leadership on the Northeast Michigan YAC had been wonderful. Thank you all! More →

These are some cool Cats, willing to try new things and dive into some culinary skills! A Community Foundation grant provided funding for the “Cats in the Kitchen” program of Alpena Public Schools, which brings athletes to Art in the Loft to learn about nutrition and how healthy foods can affect their athletic performance. It also teaches them the skills necessary to prepare those healthy foods, which are often ones the students have never tried before. What a cool program! More →
