Straits Area Community Foundation

Straits Area Community Foundation has been affiliated with the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM) since 1998.  We connect people who care about the future of Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City with the causes closest to their hearts.  By encouraging individuals to create permanent charitable endowments to meet the ever-changing needs of our communities, we can match donors' charitable interests with worthwhile causes by giving grants and scholarships to area programs and students.

SACF believes that the people in our communities, and those who care most about them, can strengthen them most effectively.  We are helping donors make an investment in their community to improve the quality of life for present and future residents of Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City - one that will last for generations to come.

The Straits Area Youth Advisory Council (SAYAC) recently awarded a $900 grant to Inland Lakes Schools for the Midland Field Trip.  Junior High students will get the chance in spring 2011 to spend a youth-oriented, education and fun-filled day in the Midland area using the grant funding.  YAC Grant applications are being accepted for the third grant cycle of 2011.  The deadline to apply is April 1.

SACF Funds

As caretakers for permanent funds that will long outlast our donors, our staff and our Board of Directors, SACF is here for the long haul. Our donors can be assured that their charitable wishes will also be permanently fulfilled, for if someday the need for a particular fund passes, our board will find the nearest possible use for the money by applying the legal principle of cy pres. For example, a fund set up to help prevent polio in the past might today be used for research on multiple sclerosis.

Creating a philanthropic fund through SACF avoids the legal complexity, administrative burdens and compliance requirements of establishing and maintaining a private foundation.   As little as $1,000 can establish a charitable fund that will benefit the causes you care about most.  SACF can accept nearly any type of gift from cash to stock and other appreciated assets.

In addition, when you make a gift to SACF you can choose from over 40 funds that directly benefit Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City.  To see a list of SACF funds and their descriptions, click here.
